Tips for Specifying and Buying Rupture Discs (Bursting Discs)
By Peter Meek
If you are looking for Rupture Discs (otherwise referred to as Bursting Discs) then here are a few points that you may want to consider when specifying and buying your rupture discs. As discussed in our previous blog on rupture discs, there are a number of possible configurations that you will want to consider. Once you have decided upon your installation configuration, you will need to decide upon the performance parameters of the bursting/rupture disc. The following important factors should be considered when selecting the rupture disc/bursting disc for the required configuration:
Rupture disc (bursting disc) Manufacturer: There are various manufacturers on the market. Each has their own area of specialty. Be sure that your selected rupture disc manufacturer has experience in the application that you are using. Clear communication with your supplier will ensure that they fully understand your needs and can provide the best suited product for your application. By using engineering circle approved rupture disc manufacturers you can be sure that your supplier will have the skills and experience to meet your needs.
Materials: Material selection needs to be considered when selecting the rupture / bursting disc. Materials available for off the shelf applications range from Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel and alloy mixtures. Custom designed rupture discs will be available in a wider range of materials, but of course these will come at a greater cost. Material selection should consider the corrosion and abrasion resistance required.
Tolerance: Manufacturers will often stipulate the allowable tolerance for their products. i.e. the rupture disc could burst at +/- x barg from the actual pressure selected. These tolerances need to be considered in the design of the pressure system which is being protected. Generally the designer will use the greater pressure of the tolerance range as the design pressure.
Reliable life and inspection requirements: Remember that in most installation configurations rupture discs cannot be maintained in service. Therefore they will often have quite stringent reliability requirements. If this is of a concern then you may need to consider another configuration which will allow in service inspection and maintenance of the rupture disc. Maintenance requirements should be made clear to the rupture disc manufacturer at the time of purchase.
Method of Manufacture: Different manufacturers will have different methods of manufacture which result in varying quality and tolerance ranges. If the tolerance range is acceptable, and you are happy with the materials then the method of manufacture need not be considered in detail. If you are having problems finding the right tolerance for your application then the method of manufacture may need to be considered.
Your Rupture / Bursting Disc Manufacturer should know their product best so be sure to give them as much information as possible to enable them to provide you with an accurate quotation which fits with your needs. Don’t be ashamed to ask your rupture / bursting disc manufacturer questions as they are the experts and you are paying them for their expertise.
